My Five-Step-Process

  1. Coloured sketch
  2. Value Sketch (could be reversed with 1 or skipped depending on mood)
  3. Lines representing object structure
  4. Fit the coloured sketch into Lines
  5. Hide lines and render

I was feeling low and unmotivated today but! I promised myself I would stick to my plans. I wanted to. So I put on some sad music and got started anyway. The drills that I’ve been doing for the past few days were on the subject of processes themselves, because, I work so slow and get stuck so much all over the place it’s getting rather out of hand. Hopefully drilling my process themselves on increasingly complex subjects would get me out of this spot.

Inspired by one of Loish’s posts today I also tried out the smudge tools for the first time, especially on edge controlling, and it was magnificent indeed. I also tried paying more attention to occlusion shadows because I’ve been largely ignoring them.

This latest one above wasn’t mega accurate in shapes, but at least I’m dealing with more complex objects going through the same process. Here I adjusted the coloured sketch based on the value sketch, dropping unimportant details.

On the topic of processes, I had a discussion with an artist friend about whether the Coloured sketch should come before or after the Value sketch.

If we’re not sure of the composition, Value sketches can be of great value (heh). For instance in Krenz’s initial sketches phase he did four of them before picking one to continue:

However sometimes the mood struck and you already knew the atmosphere you wanted, and would like to quickly check whether the end result would work. If that’s the case it could also be a pleasure quickly splashing out some Coloured sketches.
